Common Hawthorn Hedging | Crataegus monogyna
- Also known as Mayflower, this deciduous native hedge is a haven for wildlife
- Covered in scented white blossoms in spring, with red fruits (haws) in autumn
- A fully hardy, fast growing plant which will reach a height of approx 8m but can easily be maintained at 1-5m
- Hawthorn will grow well in all soil types and sites, and is especially hardy in exposed, windy and coastal locations
- Hawthorn supports over 150 wildlife species, making it second only to the English Oak (Woodland Trust) The thorns make this a safe place for birds to nest – always check before pruning
